My own homegrown 5-10 foot basketry willow grows up from the ground in straight shoots.  It  is harvested in the winter and then allowed to dry for one year to allow for shrinkage.  When ready to weave, I soak batches of willow shoots for 24 hours per foot  (5-10 days) and then "mellow" it wrapped in a sheet for an additional day.  At this point it is pliable enough to weave.
