Irish basketmaker Paul Finch taught me the upside-down, from rim-to-base technique. 
 
This basket was started by my walking the Ireland landscape and retrieving an ash branch off a heap of yard debris. Two different techniques were used to secure the willow to the branch so the weaving could commence. Woven upside down, the rim was done first and the bottom last. The trick was to figure out how to close out the basket at the base. I chose to finish it in a "creel-like" style for the base.   This sculptural basket explores open and closed space.
